Ceramic coating in Ontario: what it costs, how long it lasts, and whether it's worth it
WrapZap coats interiors from $149 and exteriors from $299. A daily driver in Ontario gets two to five honest years of protection. If you hold the car three years or more and road salt is chewing at your paint, it earns its keep — not as armour, but as a chemical layer that makes grime let go fast.

What ceramic coating actually does
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that fuses with your clear coat and hardens into a glass-like shell. What that buys you:
- Hydrophobic surface. Water beads and slides away on contact. Salt and road film wash off with a fraction of the effort.
- UV defence. Holds back the oxidation and fade that Ontario summers bake into paint.
- Chemical resistance. Salt, brine, bird lime and bug residue lose their grip — they no longer weld themselves to the paint.
- Depth and gloss. The wet, deep finish — credit mostly goes to the paint preparation beneath, not the bottle.
What it doesn't do
Here's where most shops oversell. A ceramic coating will not stop rock chips — the layer is microns thin. A stone kicked up on the 410 punches straight through. For chip defence you need paint protection film (PPF), a physical urethane shield. Coating won't make the car scratch-proof or wash-free either: it just cuts wash time and effort dramatically. The full head-to-head is in our PPF vs ceramic coating guide.
How long it lasts in Ontario
For a daily driver in this province, two to five years is the straight answer. What pushes you toward either end:
- Salt season. Salt won't kill the coating outright, but a car left caked for weeks wears everything down faster. Wash more often in winter, not less.
- Wash method. Touchless or hand wash, full stop. Brush-style automatic washes are the single fastest way to grind a coating off.
- Where it sleeps. Sun and freeze-thaw cycles eat coatings; a garaged car keeps its coating visibly longer.
- Preparation. Coating laid over contaminated, uncorrected paint dies young. Proper decontamination plus at least a light polish counts for more than whatever brand is on the bottle.
Is it worth it for your car?
Yes, if: the car stays with you 3+ years, you commute salted highways daily, it lives outdoors, or you simply want washing to take half as long.
Probably not, if: you're selling within a year or two, the paint is already rough (correct that first), or the money works harder as PPF on the front end where stones actually strike.
The setup many of our customers land on is both: PPF across the high-impact zones, ceramic over the entire car for gloss and effortless upkeep.

Frequently asked
How much does ceramic coating cost in Ontario?
WrapZap starts interiors at $149 and exteriors at $299, before HST. Elsewhere in the GTA, exterior work typically runs $500 to $1,500+, depending on correction time and product tier.
How long does ceramic coating last?
Two to five years on an Ontario daily driver. Garaged, hand-washed cars stretch further; cars fed through brush washes all winter lose it far sooner.
Does ceramic coating prevent rock chips and scratches?
No. It is a thin chemical layer, not impact protection. Rock chips call for paint protection film.
Can ceramic coating go over PPF?
Yes — one of the most requested pairings we do. The film absorbs impacts while the coating brings gloss and makes washing the whole car easier.
Does an Ontario winter ruin ceramic coating?
A properly applied coating survives salt; winter simply demands more frequent washing — touchless or by hand only. Brush washes are the real coating killer.
